Who we are...

We are a group of early- and mid-career researchers (ECRs, self-defined) at the University of Sheffield, who focus on different aspects of Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI). Green infrastructure in urban landscapes is composed of many types of spaces/places from ancient woodlands to highly engineered green roofs. These spaces require a cross-disciplinary approach for successful research, implementation, and management.

Whilst there have been several inspirational cross-disciplinary projects across the University in this field, the spread across multiple departments and faculties makes it difficult for ECRs to network with colleagues with aligned research interests. This group aims to aid researchers in disseminating their work, learning of the work of others, and most critically building future research collaborations.

Symposia

Our primary activity is the Urban Green Infrastructure Symposium, a quasi-annual one-day showcase and networking event for ECRs who work on urban green infrastructure, primarily from across the University of Sheffield, but open to national and international attendees. We held our first UGI Symposium on 8th of December 2016, with subsequent events on the 11th of January 2018, the 7th of May 2019 and most recently the 30th Mayth 2022.

The symposium is a fantastic opportunity to present your research, share experiences, collaborate and network across departments and faculties.

PhD students and postdocs

If you work on any aspect of urban green infrastructure, from ancient woodland fragments to green roofs, whether it’s a focus on policy, planning, design, implementation or management, please join us. This is an opportunity to meet researchers with similar interests from across the University, to hear about exciting work being undertaken and to share ideas.

Resources

We have started a platform to share online resources about UGI that may be relevant to many of us - useful mailing lists, websites of current events, funding bodies etc. Please do add any resources you are aware of, this is very much a document to be contributed to and can hopefully be a starting point for new discoveries.
